- Hi Nate, there was a whole list of numbers that meant something on telegraph.
- I saw the list back in the '50s but I can't remember where. It was like
- "Q" signals or "10-x" signals... just shorthand. I remember the first time
- a YL signed "88" instead of "73" and I had to go look it up. As I remember
- the list, "73" simply meant "goodbye" in which "best of 73's" would mean
- "out of all possible goodbye's, pick out the best one from me to you"...
- like "fair thee well" or "go with God" instead of "go to hell". The pure
- of spirit, like me, will continue to say...

- Wow! Make a simple little post about the problems with 440 in So. Cal.
- and look what happens. All Heck breaks loose. Just for the record, I am a
- dues paying member of an open 440 repeater. I own a dual band HT because
- the trustee of the repeater group I belong to is also the man who taught
- the class and headed the VE team for the test session where I got my
- Technicnian Plus HF license. The only reason I haven't upgraded yet is
- that I was asked to be control op of the Novice/Tech station for Field
- Day. Since I would not be able to do that if I had gotten my General, I
- have put off testing. As you all may be able to tell from my call, it is
- quite recent. I am offended by the "no-clue" reference, particularily
- since the worst offenders in the L.A. area are constantly bragging about
- their Advanced and Extra Class licenses while they are not jamming and
- violating every other paragraph on Part 97. On the other hand, most of
- the no-code operators I know are good ops.
-
- Probably the most important thing is that this is supposed to be a hobby
- and a public service, not a name calling, politics baiting, rude shoving
- match. I don't care how long you've had your license, how much you have
- invested in equipment, how fast you can copy CW. If you want to restrict
- the earned priveleges of other amateurs, you are a lid. Plain and simple.
- Think back. When was the last time you elmered someone? When was the last
- time you did something constructive for the hobby? Or are you a "I got
- mine, later for the rest of you" ham? I'm starting to think that there
- should be a Public Service requirement for higher license classes to stop
- them from getting complacent and too far removed from the roots of the hobby.
-
- (lowering podium)
-
- BTW, someone did email me some freqs for open 440 repeaters in the San
- Fernando/San Gabriel Valley area. When you come right down to it, that's
- probably the most constructive thing to come out of this thread.
-
- George KE6EPC (God help me, I started all this)

- KARL O. "K. O." LEARNER II, K9PVW, SK
-
- An old friend to many in the amateur satellite world and long-time AMSAT
- member, "K.O." LEARNER II (K9PVW) became a Silent Key (SK) recently. "K.O"
- died on 16-May-94 at his home in Kokomo, Indiana. He was 49. For many
- years, "K.O." organized the AMSAT booth and programs at Dayton, worked
- tirelessly as an AMSAT area coordinator, and ran a local AMSAT Net. Also,
- many will remember him as the Net Control Station for what is today known
- as the "OPS Nets" in the early days of AO-13. "K.O." worked as an engin-
- eer for Delco Electronics in Kokomo. AMSAT-NA Headquarters wishes to
- express its condolences to "K.O's" family and friends and will remember him
- as a patient "ELMER" to many beginners trying to make their first contacts

- DOVE-OSCAR-17 (DO-17) Status Report
-
- On 25-MAY-94 at 05:25 UTC the DOVE Ground Command Team started loading and
- executing test software designed to assure the operation of the voice
- module after several months of dormancy. A brief test of the voice cap-
- ability generated only garbled voice, so it was turned off. The Team is
- now investigating possible causes, and at this point believe it is a soft-
- ware problem, not hardware.

- For the next few days DOVE may be in various modes as the Team continues

-
- The satellite LUSAT-1 (LO-19) appears to be healthy. The software load was
- intentionally stopped when the second module was just loaded and turned on.
- The next step will be to continue with the satellite's deep tests. The
- satellite is sending telemetry on 437.125 MHz and its digipeater is turned
- on for now. To All Overseas Stations: If you have captured any LUSAT-1
- telemetry you are requested to send the "raw" telemetry to the satellite
- control station and you will receive a certificate for your efforts. These
- tele-metry reports can be sent either via packet radio to:
- LU8DYF@LU8DYF.BA.ARG.SOAM and LU8DYF@ANY-ACTIVE-SATELLITE, or via Internet

- If you intend to use the satellite, please remember that the BBS software
- is NOT LOADED and it will NOT be operational for the next 3 weeks, approx-
- imately.

- Amateur satellites since OSCAR-1, so it seemed appropriate for this re-

- Official LUSAT-OSCAR-19 Status Report
-
- On 01-JUN-1994, during orbit #22739, the CW beacon was turned back on.
- This operation was performed by the control station of Norberto Pennini
- (LU8DYF) and by the station in charge of the CW beacon, Ruben Ferreiro
- (LU6DYD).
-
- At the same time, LU8DYF, turned OFF the "B" transmitter (437.125 MHz) and
- turned ON the "A" transmitter (437.150 MHz). While this procedure was
- happening place, LU6DYD was capturing some telemetry. Then, when LU8DYF
- finally swapped the transmitters, and LU8DYD sent the necessary "pseudo-
- random" (PN) command sequence which subsequently turned on the CW beacon.
- After more than 9 months of being turned off, the CW beacon was started
- up again without any problems.
-
- On 02-JUN-94, during orbit #22754, the CW beacon was turned OFF. This
- operation was again performed by LU8DYF and LU6DYD. LU6DYD turned OFF the
- CW beacon and LU8DYF agained swapped the two transmitters to be sure they
- were both working properly. At the present time, the CW beacon is present-
- ly OFF and the "B" Raised Cosine PSK transmitter (437.125 MHz) is now ON.

- Does Anyone have an address that I can use to ftp the FCC study questions
- for the commercial radiotelephone exam? I know W5YI sells them for $10
- but the question pool is about to change and I want to take the test
- before then since 75% of the test is taken from the Extra Class questions
- that I passed last fall.
- Any help will be appreciated.

- I got a used MFJ-941D versa tuner II and do not have the manual for
- it. I'd appreciate it if someone who has it can send me a copy of it
- (is it a one page instruction sheet ?). or maybe just explain to me
- via email how to use the tuner.
-
- thanks in advance.

- Call MFJ and they will send you a manual on the latest model for free. It

- Hi Jim, not very similar... The "D" version has a single needle meter
- and the "E" has a dual needle meter... so half vastly different tuning
- methods.

- The guys we are discussing this with aren't listening, either. Their
- minds are made up, don't bother them with the facts.
-
- By the way, an important note here is that the FCC doesn't really claim to
- own "all" the radio frequencies. The FCC considers many frequencies
- (including the 440 band most in question here) as "owned" by the federal
- government or the military. We've already seen they care little about
- what we do in that spectrum unless someone from the "military or
- government" complains. <Another sigh>.
